NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State women’s basketball team continues its east coast trip, as it takes on Princeton Wednesday at 6 p.m. (CST) in Jadwin Gymnasium.
Despite shooting 38 percent from the field in the second half, the Redbirds could not overcome their first half deficit, as they fell to Fordham, 57-32, Sunday afternoon. Chloe Nelson was the only Redbird with a double-digit scoring performance, netting 10 points. Brianna Puni added six points, while Octavia Crump and Alison Seberger scored five points. ISU shot 22 percent from the field, while Fordham connected on 43 percent of its shot attempts. On the boards, Puni and Crump both pulled down eight rebounds.
Wednesday’s game marks the third meeting between Illinois State and Princeton and the second meeting in two seasons. Princeton leads the all-time series with a 2-0 mark. The most recent contest was during the 2012-13 season, when the Tigers defeated the Redbirds, 67-50, at Redbird Arena on Dec. 19, 2012. It will be the first time the two teams have played in Princeton, N.J.
Stopping the Scorer
Senior guard Chloe Nelson held Fordham’s Erin Rooney to 14 points, more than eight points less than her season average. Rooney had just four points in the second half, while Nelson guarded her for a complete 40 minutes.
A Better Second Half
Illinois State struggled in the first half of its game at Fordham (Dec. 15) only scoring six points in the opening 20 minutes, but in the second half, ISU shot 38 percent (9-of-24) from the field. After ending the first half with a field goal percentage of eight percent, ISU shot 22 percent for the game.
Need More Offense
In ISU’s 57-32 loss at Fordham (Dec. 15) ISU only scored six points in the first half, after 17-scoreless minutes, and added 26 points in the second half. The 32 total points is the second fewest points scored in a game in program history. The fewest points scored was during the 1972-73 season, when ISU fell to Southern Illinois (Jan. 28, 1973), 38-27. The last time ISU lost by 25 points or more was during the 2010-11 season, when the Redbirds fell to Southern California (March 30, 2011), 63-36, in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament.
