NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State's video production team will have new leadership this year, as Nick Helten was promoted as Director of Redbird Productions Wednesday. After serving two years as the assistant director of Redbird Productions, Helten will now lead the group going forward beginning with the 2013-14 school year.
"We are pleased to promote Nick to lead Redbird Productions," Executive Associate Athletics Director Larry Lyons said. "Developing video content for fan entertainment at games, web stream applications, marketing and promotional efforts has become an integral part of our athletic operations. Nick is very creative and we look for really good things from his video unit in the future."
Helten joined Illinois State in the spring of 2011 as the assistant director of Redbird Productions, where he was primarily in charge of video shooting and editing, along with graphic design. In his new role as Director of Redbird Productions, his duties will also include the supervision and direction of all game day production and supervision over the department.
"My experience at Illinois State has been fantastic and I'm very excited to start my new role at Redbird Productions," Helten stated. "The athletics department has shown a great commitment to video production and it's an honor to work with such a dedicated staff and invested University."
Prior to arriving at ISU, Helten worked as a producer at OnMedia located in Cedar Falls, Iowa, where he fulfilled similar responsibilities as his position with Redbird Productions, in addition to writing scripts for the commercials he produced. Helten also worked with Mudd Advertising as a video editor and the Waterloo Bucks of the Northwoods League as a media relations intern.
Helten received his bachelor's degree in media studies from Loras College in May of 2009, the same year he received several awards for his production skills, including the Iowa Broadcast News Association Dick Petrik Outstanding Student Award.
A native of Garwin, Iowa, Helten currently resides in Normal, Ill.
