Sept. 13, 2013
NORMAL, Ill. -
The Illinois State women's golf team will compete in its first road tournament of the 2013-14 season Monday and Tuesday at the Cardinal Cup in Simpsonville, Ky., hosted by Louisville. The 54-hole tournament will consist of two rounds Monday (36 holes) and a final round Tuesday (18 holes).
ISU finished fourth at the Redbird Invitational (Sept. 8-9) and head women's golf coach Darby Sligh is looking forward to playing on the road and wants her team to remain level-headed heading into the tournament.
"After starting our season at home, it is nice to be able to get on the road and play another great course," Sligh said. "I believe it will set up well for this team, as they shot 288 in our opening round last year. We will need to stay patient and find the right times to be aggressive in order to have a chance to get into contention."
Junior Hayley Guyton will lead the Redbird lineup, as she carded a career-best score at the Redbird Invitational. Guyton finished the three-round tournament with a score of 221 (71-75-75) and tied for fifth place, the highest finish of her career. She led Illinois State to a fourth-place finish with a team score of 908 (297-305-306) at the Weibring Golf Club.
Also competing for Illinois State will be seniors Rachel Powers, Brianna Cooper and Carlee Cossel, along with freshman Maggie Ambrose. Sophomore Courtnee Cossell will participate as an individual.
Illinois State will compete against Ball State, Cincinnati, Houston, Kansas, Louisville, Marshall, Memphis, Middle Tennessee State, Murray State, Northern Kentucky, South Florida and Tennessee-Chattanooga.
Monday's 36-hole first round will begin at 7:40 a.m. (CST) with a shotgun start, and Tuesday's final round will also get underway at 7:40 a.m. (CST) with a shotgun start.
