SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. - The Illinois State women's golf team concluded day one of the Cardinal Cup Monday with a team score of 615 (301-314), rounding out the day ninth overall.

Head coach Darby Sligh felt her team did not perform its best and hopes that it will be able to refocus in time for the third round.

"It's hard to watch us work so hard as a team in the morning to climb towards the top and then wash our work away with one of the highest rounds of the afternoon," Sligh said. "We ran out of gas mentally in the second round on a tough golf course and that jumped up and bit us. We need to regroup and step on the accelerator Tuesday. This is a talented group that is capable of going low, and I'm expecting to see one of those rounds come together soon."

Senior Rachel Powers led the team with a two-round score of 149. Powers shot par (71) in the first round, while tallying a score of 73 in the second round, tying her for 20th overall.

Freshman Maggie Ambrose shot a two-round score of 155 (76-79), tying for 38th place. Seniors Brianna Cooper (80-78) and Carlee Cossell (78-80) both shot a 158, tying for 48th place. Rounding out the Redbird lineup was Junior Hayley Guyton, who shot 156 (78-78).

Competing as an individual for Illinois State was sophomore Courtnee Cossell, who carded a score of 164 (83-81).

Host Louisville has two teams participating in the tournament, as the Louisville `A' team is in first place with a team score of 567 (283-284), while the Louisville `B' team sits in third with a 584 (295-289). Kansas is in second place with a two-round score of 581 (295-286). Louisville's Laura Restrepo leads the individual field with a 137 (67-70).

ISU looks to score a victory in the third and final round of play Tuesday, beginning at 7:30 a.m. (CST), with a shotgun start.
