Final Stats
NORMAL, Ill. -
With a 1-under-par third-round score of 70, Parker Freiburg led the Illinois State men's golf team at the Weibring Intercollegiate Monday. Freiburg finished the tournament tied for fourth place with a final score of 215 (73-72-70). The fourth-place finish and final score were both career-bests for the senior. The Redbirds took third place with a team score of 870 (293-287-290), just two strokes separated ISU from the first-place title.
Though it is not what he was hoping for, head coach Ray Kralis is looking at the third-place finish as motivation and a good learning experience.
"While there is pain in coming up short, it was a solid performance going 12-2 to start the season," Kralis said. "When just two shots separate the top-three teams after 54 holes and all three teams are right there, a bit of luck can make the difference. You hate to miss out on a great opportunity at home, but we will use the outcome as a positive motivator moving forward."
Kyle Meihofer finished tied for 12th in his collegiate debut with a score of 218 (74-74-70), after firing a 1-under-par 70 for the final round. Jordan Fahel shot a 75 to finish out the tournament, tying for 19th with a score of 220 (71-74-75). Wils Hawn shot a 221 (75-67-79) and tied for 26th place, while Tyler Gentilella rounded out the Redbird lineup with a score of 229 (77-77-75).
Competing as individuals, Josh Edison carded a 74 in the last round for a total of 220 (70-76-74), while Turner Reid shot a 1-under-par and also finished with a 220 (76-74-70). Edison and Reid ended the tournament tied for 19th place. Tyler Pope-Ferguson shot a 75 in the final round for a total score of 221 (76-70-75) throughout the three rounds.
ISU finished ahead of Missouri Valley Conference rivals Northern Iowa (875), Evansville (878), Bradley (885), Southern Illinois (894), and Missouri State (896).
Valley foe Loyola took first place with a team score of 868 (294-286-288), while Purdue took second place by one stroke for a score of 869 (293-286-290). Loyola's Nick Willenborg (73-70-71) and Bradley's Seth Trolia (69-74-71) were co-medalists with scores of 214.
The Redbirds will have a quick turnaround, as they travel to Zionsville, Ind., to compete in the Wolf Run Intercollegiate, Sept. 21-22.
