SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. -
The Illinois State women's golf team finished ninth overall at the Cardinal Cup Tuesday with a team score of 920 (301-314-305).
Led by the play of senior Rachel Powers, who carded a 223 (72-77-74) and shot par her first round (72). Powers improved from 20th place the first day to tying for 12th overall.
Head Coach Darby Sligh is proud of the effort her team put forth and recognizers that there is still room for growth.
"Today was a solid comeback to yesterday afternoon's round," Sligh said. "We had great rounds by Rachel [Powers] and Brianna [Cooper]. We had some bright spots like Brianna's 3 birdies to finish and a long stretch of pars by everyone in the middle of the round, but we also lost some shots at the end that we shouldn't have. This team is hungry and know their faults, so we will be working hard to get better each and every day."
Senior Brianna Cooper also helped lead the Redbirds and tallied a score of 232 (80-78-74). Cooper shot just 2-over-par in the third round, tying her for 36th place.
Rounding out the Redbird lineup was freshman Maggie Ambrose with a three-round score of 235 (76-79-80), just one stroke ahead of junior Hayley Guyton who carded a 236 (75-84-77) and senior Carlee Cossell who shot a final score of 241 (78-80-83). Courtnee Cossel, who competed as an individual, finished with a 249(83-81-85).
Host Louisville had two teams competing in the tournament , as Louisville's `A' team clinched first place with a team score of 859 (283-284-292), while the Louisville `B' team finished 34 strokes behind in third place with a 893 (295-289-309). Kansas held on to second place with a final team score of 881 (295-286-300). Louisville's Laura Restrepo was able to lead the field the entire way with a 212 (67-70-75).
The Redbirds will return to action Monday, September 23, in Wolcott, Colo., for the Golfweek Challenge.
