NORMAL, Ill. -
Freshman Mackenzie Freeman was named a University Scholar, one of the most prestigious merit-based scholarships available for freshmen through the Illinois State University Office of Admissions.
"We are proud of Mackenzie's achievement as a University Scholar," head coach Barb Smith said. "It is extremely difficult to earn a University Scholar honor, and Mackenzie has worked hard for this. She has done an exceptional job on and off the court and deserves this. What better way to represent herself, her family, this program and Illinois State."
The Silver Lake, Kan., native was selected based on her high school academic profiles and 12 scholars were selected for the 2013-14 school year out of 80 total scholars. The 80 University Scholars averaged a 27 ACT score and a 4.0/4.02 grade-point average (GPA) and must maintain a 2.75 GPA to keep the scholarship.
During her high school career, Freeman was a four-year starter and earned all-state basketball honors for four-straight seasons, including first-team honors as a junior and senior. She was named the most valuable player (MVP) of the Iowa AAU State Tournament in 2012 and earned Tonganoxie Mid-Season Basketball Tournament All-Tournament Team honors as a sophomore, junior and senior and was named the tournament MVP as a sophomore. She served as a co-captain her senior year and was the team MVP, averaging15.4 points per game with a season-high 28 points.
Freeman was a member of the National Honor Society and a Kansas Honors Scholar.
The University Scholarship is valued at $6,000 per year and is able to be renewed for up to eight semesters for a potential total of $24,000.
