Redbird Invitational
NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State women's golf team opens the 2013-14 season at home with the Redbird Invitational at the Weibring Golf Club, Sunday and Monday. The home tournament will be a shotgun start both days with a tee time at 8:30 a.m., featuring 54 holes. Two rounds are set for Sunday (36 holes) and one for Monday (18 holes) on the par-72 course.
Head coach Darby Slighis optimistic regarding this year's lineup and starting off the season in familiar territory.
"This is always an exciting time of the year to be able to start our season off on our home turf," Sligh said. "We have had many positive moments early this fall in terms of scores and practice. I'm looking for the upperclassmen's leadership this weekend to start us off with a bang. I wouldn't be surprised to see any of our three individuals have break-out rounds as well. This team is deep and has the ability to succeed from top to bottom."
Illinois State will be host to the 14-team tournament, including Ball State, Bradley, Bowling Green State, Drake, Evansville, Illinois Wesleyan, Northern Illinois, Oakland, Ohio, South Dakota State, Southern Illinois, Toledo and Western Illinois.
The Redbirds competing in the tournament include seniors Rachel Powers, Carlee Cossel and Brianna Cooper, with junior Hayley Guyton and sophomore Courtnee Cossell. Senior Jordyn Wyzgowski, along with freshmen Maggie Ambrose and Renee Solbergwill be competing as individuals.
Illinois State won the invitational in both 2010 and 2011, before placing third last year, a fact the team hopes to redeem this season.
