NORMAL, Ill. -
The Illinois State men's tennis team has released its 2013-14 schedule, as announced Friday by first-year head coach Mark Klysner. Joining Klysner's staff as an assistant coach is former Redbird tennis player Matej Zlatkovic (2009-11).
The fall season is comprised of seven individual matches around the nation, while the Redbird spring season includes five home matches, two of which are against Missouri Valley Conference opponents. ISU will also host the 2014 MVC Championships.
The team returns six out of the eight players from a year ago. Klysner brings 15 years of coaching experience to the team and is excited to get things rolling.
"I am looking forward to getting the season started." Klysner said. "Our schedule will be a good test. There will be about five-to-10 nationally ranked teams that we are playing, and that will let us know where we stand and where we need to be by the end of the season."
The Redbirds start their fall season Sept. 13 at the Western Michigan Invitational in Kalamazoo, Mich. They then travel to Tulsa, Okla., Sept. 28 to participate in the ITA All-American Championships. ISU continues the road trip Oct. 4 at the Ball State Invitational in Munice, Ind., followed by the JSM Challenger in Champaign, Ill., Oct. 5, and the ITA Midwest Regional Championships Oct. 17, in Columbus, Ohio. The Redbirds conclude their fall season Nov. 4 at the Louisville Invitational in Louisville, Ky., before heading to the MVC Individual Championships Nov. 8, in Des Moines, Iowa.
The spring season begins Jan. 19 with a double-header match against Oral Roberts and Tulsa. The Redbirds will host five home matches that include three non-conference opponents: Belmont, Central Florida and Western Michigan. The final two home matches are against MVC foes Bradley and Drake. ISU will host this year's MVC Championships at Gregory Street Courts April 25-27. The full schedule can be found here.
