ST LOUIS – Emily Orrick, a senior libero for the Illinois State volleyball team, has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the period of Nov. 17-23, MVC Commissioner Doug Elgin announced Wednesday.
Orrick, a native of Mackinaw, Illinois, turned in one of the best performances of her career on Nov. 21 against Missouri State, as she helped the Redbirds overcome an 0-2 deficit to beat Missouri State, 3-2. Orrick registered a career-high 42 digs, setting Illinois State and Redbird Arena single-match records. She added 20 more digs against Wichita State, in a 3-0 win on Nov. 22, and averaged 7.75 digs per set for the weekend. She also chipped in 10 assists, including a career-best seven Friday against Wichita State.
A standout in the classroom as well, Orrick owns a 3.64 cumulative grade-point average (GPA), while majoring in recreation management. She was named to the MVC Volleyball Scholar-Athlete First Team on Tuesday.
MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week candidates must carry a cumulative GPA of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution, and be at least a sophomore in academic standing. Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes are evaluated on their athletic performance over the previous week.
