Nelson Receives MVC Leadership & Service Award

Feb. 26, 2014

ST. LOUIS - In an effort to honor the achievements of exceptional student-athletes, the Missouri Valley Conference has created the MVC Leadership & Service Award (formerly the Good Neighbor Award). Commissioner Doug Elgin recognized 10 honorees for the 2013-14 winter season, including Illinois State senior women's basketball student-athlete Chloe Nelson.

In order to be eligible for the award, the student-athlete must be in good academic standing, must demonstrate good citizenship through good sportsmanship and significant community service, and must participate in a sport, during the season of recognition. The Valley will recognize 10 student-athletes three times annually (fall, winter, spring), for a total of 30 honorees. Institutions select their MVC Leadership & Service Award honorees.

Nelson is no stranger to giving back to the Bloomington-Normal community, as she has been a part of several volunteer efforts. A three-time team captain, Nelson is involved with numerous day care and after-school programs to promote the importance of reading and physical fitness in the community. She also volunteered at the American Red Cross Evening with the Stars, with Reggie's Kids Club, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Illinois and at the Midwest Food Bank. The Florissant, Mo., native has participated in the Komen Race for the Cure and worked at the Community Cancer Center in Normal, Ill.

Not only does she succeed on the court and in the community, but Nelson has also succeeded in the classroom. Nelson holds a 3.95 cumulative grade-point average in psychology and has completed six semesters with a 4.0 GPA, as well as been on the Dean's List every semester during her college career. She is an All-MVC Scholar-Athlete Honorable Mention and has been on the AFNI Honor Roll for seven-straight semesters. The two-time MVC Elite 18 recipient has served as a SAAC representative, vice president and currently is the President of SAAC.

Along with Nelson, the nine other recipients receiving the recognition include Mason Alwan (Bradley), Carly Grenfell (Drake), Caitlin Harty (Evansville), Kelly Steffen (Indiana State), Lindsay Booker (Loyola), Bryonna Snow (Missouri State), Kayla McCormick (Northern Iowa), Shailey Brumley (Southern Illinois) and Kelsey Jacobs (Wichita State).
