The Illinois State women's golf team concluded day one of the Hoya Invitational with a team score of 333, finishing the day eighth overall at the at The Members Club at Four Streams.
The Hoya Invitational experienced a delayed start, due to snowfall late Sunday night, making the field unplayable for much of Monday morning. Due to the poor weather conditions, the event will change its format from a 54-hole to a 36-hole tournament with the second and final round being played Tuesday at 10 a.m. (CST) with a shotgun start.
"Monday was a long day in terrible winds," head coach Darby Sligh said. "The scores were all high across the teams, and we aren't in as bad a shape as we felt we scored. I was extremely proud of our attitudes all day. We hung in there and took advantage of birdie opportunities at the end of the round. I know all of the adversity we have faced in performances this spring will pay off in the end, if we stay faithful to our plan."
Illinois State's juniors took charge in this opening round, as redshirt junior Brianna Cooper led the Redbirds with a score of 81, tying her for 19th overall. Cooper was two strokes ahead of junior Hayley Guyton, who carded a one-round score of 83, and three strokes ahead of junior Lauren English, who shot an 84.
Senior Jordyn Wyzgowski also did her part, as she tied for 46th place with a score of 85, and rounding out the Redbird lineup was senior Rachel Powers, who shot an 89.
Pennsylvania (309) is in first place, with two of its golfers in the top-10 on the leaderboard. Big Ten powerhouse Michigan is in second with a score of 313, one-stroke ahead of third-place Yale with a combined team score of 314.
