BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
The Illinois State men's golf team concluded day one of the JU Amelia Island Collegiate Invitational with a team score of 593, finishing the day ninth overall at the IU Golf Course.
Senior Parker Freiburg led the team with a score of 144 (70-74). Freiburg shot 1-under-par with the help of an eagle in the first round and tallied a total of six birdies, tying him for 11th overall. Junior Josh Edison was one stroke behind, carding a two-round score of 145 (75-70), tying for 18th place.
"We talk about managing our mind and emotions when on the course, but it is just as important between rounds, as well," head coach Ray Kralis said. "Today was just one day, and we need to flush and forget most of it. It doesn't change who we are or what we are capable of. Parker's opening round 70 was a bright spot, and it was great to see Josh come through with 70 in round two. I am confident we'll give our low numbers more support tomorrow."
Sophomore Tyler Gentilella shot a 152 (77-75), tying for 55th place. Senior Wils Hawn placed for 68th with a combined score of 155 (81-74), and rounding out the Redbird lineup was junior Jordan Fahel, who shot a 156 (78-78).
Michigan 567 (283 284) placed first with two of its golfers in the top-five on the leaderboard. Host Indiana is one stroke behind in second with a score of 568 (283-285), 14 strokes ahead of third-place Akron and Youngstown State, with a 589 respectively.
ISU looks to climb the rankings in the third round of play Sunday, beginning at 9 a.m. (CST), with a shotgun start.
