Baseball Set To Host Dallas Baptist For Valley Series

Illinois State is the only Valley team with four wins, while DBU is undefeated (3-0).

NORMAL, Ill. - Entering play a season-best 10-games over .500, the Illinois State Redbirds (18-8, 4-2 Missouri Valley Conference) return to Missouri Valley Conference action with a three-game series versus Dallas Baptist (21-7, 3-0 Missouri Valley Conference) this weekend at Duffy Bass Field. Due to poor weather, Friday's scheduled game has been postponed. The series will now begin with a doubleheader Saturday. First pitch for game one is set for 12:00 p.m. Both contests will be nine innings.

The Opposition: Dallas Baptist Patriots (21-7, 3-0 Missouri Valley Conference)

  • Dallas Baptist University is a Christian liberal arts university that is located in Dallas, Texas. It was established in 1898 as Decatur Baptist College and currently enrolls 5,422 students.
  • The Patriots are first year members of the Missouri Valley Conference and competed in the WAC last spring. 
  • Dallas Baptist has three NCAA Regional appearances over itslast six seasons. The Patriots advanced to a NCAA Super Regional in 2011. 
  • DBU is guided by seventh-year head coach Dan Heefner. He has led the Patriots to three NCAA Regionals and was named the 2011 ABCA Midwest Region Coach of the Year.
  • Friday marks the first all-time meeting between Illinois State and Dallas Baptist.

Last Time Out
Will Headean matched a career-high with six strikeouts and Illinois State drew 11 walks in a 9-4 midweek victory over Eastern Illinois Tuesday afternoon at Duffy Bass Field.

Headean (1-1) earned his first victory of the season, allowing only an unearned run in six innings. He struck out six, walked three and scattered four hits. Five Eastern Illinois pitchers made appearances and Jake Haberer (0-2) suffered the defeat. He was chased from the game in the second inning and was charged with three runs, all earned, on just one hit. He walked four and struck out one.

Rhoades Leads NCAA In K/9 Rate
Redbird pitcher Jeremy Rhoades is the current NCAA leader in strikeouts-per nine innings. The Wheaton, Ill., product has 51 strikeouts in 32.0 innings of work, for a K/9 rate of 14.34. Matt Imhof of Cal Poly is second nationally with a K/9 rate of 13.41. He has has 77 strikeouts in 51.2 innings of work. The Redbirds rank second nationally with a team K/9 rate of 9.4. Cal Poly is in first at 9.5. Dallas Baptist ranks sixth at 9.1

Rising RPI
According to WarrenNolan.com, the Illinois State Redbirds enter play this weekend with a RPI of 26. The Redbirds have gone 8-3 in 11 neutral-site games, are 7-5 away from home and 3-0 in "home" contests. Illinois State has won seven of its last 10 contests and carried a six-game winning streak earlier this spring.

Celebrating 1,700
With one victory this weekend over Dallas Baptist, the Illinois State Redbirds will accumulate its 1,700th career victory. The Redbirds own a 1,699-1,567-20 all-time record. The first season of Redbird baseball was 1890.

Home Sweet Home
After beginning the season with 25 games on the road, Illinois State opened the home portion of its 2014 schedule with a four-game home stand this week. The Redbirds defeated Eastern Illinois, 9-4, on Tuesday, and welcome Dallas Baptist for a three-game series this weekend. The Redbirds won two games earlier this season versus Western Illinois at the Corn Crib in Normal, Ill. Those games counted as "home" games per NCAA rules. Illinois State went 22-7 last spring at Duffy Bass Field. .

Savas Hits 17
Redbird starter Dan Savas (7-0) won his 17th-consecutive decision Friday as Illinois State topped Indiana State, 5-2, at Bob Warn Field. Savas, who went 10-0 in 2013, has won all seven of his starts this year. The Preseason All-American is 17-0 in his last 22 decisions and has not lost since 2011. He has tallied seven complete-game wins during the streak.
