Former Redbird Smith Leads World in Shot Put

NORMAL, Ill. – This past weekend, former ISU standout thrower and director of track and field operations Brittany Smith tossed a world-leading mark in the women's shot put at the Illinois Wesleyan Titan Triangular.

On her last throw of the day, Smith tossed her highest mark of 19.01 meters (62-04.50) to earn first-place and a current world-best mark. Fellow United States competitor Rebecca O'Brien has the next-best mark in the world at 17.69 meters (58-00.50).

Smith is a 10-time All-American, two-time NCAA runner-up and an Olympic Trials qualifier in the shot put and hammer throw. The former ISU standout was a three-time recipient of the ISU Jill Hutchison Female Athlete of the Year Award (2010, 2012, 2013) and holds all of Illinois State's throwing records in the indoor/outdoor shot put, hammer and weight.

The Illinois State track and field team is back in action Saturday, Jan. 24, as it travels east to Eastern Illinois for the EIU John Craft Invitational.
