ST. LOUIS – Illinois State's Jaelyn Keene has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week, MVC Commissioner Doug Elgin announced Tuesday. Paul Ciszewski, of the Drake men's soccer team, was named the MVC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week.
Keene, a sophomore member of Illinois State's volleyball team, averaged 3.50 kills and 1.17 blocks per set, while hitting .439, over a pair of Missouri Valley Conference matches this past weekend. The sophomore middle hitter tallied seven kills on a .412 hitting percentage, while posting six blocks (including three solos) in a loss at Southern Illinois Friday. She registered a match-high 14 kills, on a .458 mark, while adding a career-high seven digs, in a win at Evansville Saturday. Keene currently leads the Valley in hitting percentage (.434), while also ranking among the top 10 league players in points (3.58 per set) and kills (2.87 per set).
A standout in the classroom as well, Keene owns a perfect 4.0 grade-point average as a financial accounting major.
To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.
