INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Illinois State women's tennis team claimed victory, 5-4, while on the road over the University of Indianapolis Saturday afternoon.
"I'm very proud of our effort in singles," said head coach Maja Kovacek. "With us down, 2-4, in the match, Chanel (Scudiero), Donna (Haycock) and Natalia (Parchowska) all won hard-fought three-set matches to make it a 5-4 win."
In singles competition, ISU claimed victory in all but two flights of singles play. Junior Kadi Ilves fell to Indianapolis' Stephanie Hirsch, 3-4, 6-4, 6-3, in No.1 singles, while freshman Catherine Shulman suffered a loss to Indianapolis' Florence Renard, 6-3, 6-1 in No. 2 singles. Meanwhile, in No. 3 singles freshman Donna Haycock defeated Indianapolis' Allie Smith, 6-3, 0-6, 6-4. Likewise, sophomore Chanel Scudiero earned a win over Indianapolis' Selenay Heper, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, in No. 4 singles, and freshman Valerija Gercar won against Indianapolis' Macey Speer, 6-1, 6-2, in No.5 singles. In No. 6 singles, sophomore Natalia Parchowska defeated Indianapolis' Brooke Boyts, 6-2, 6-7(2), 6-1.
In doubles competition, the duo of Ilves and Haycock earned the only win in doubles play after defeating Indianapolis' Hirsh and Renard, 8-1, in No.1 doubles. In No. 2 doubles, Shulman and Scudiero lost to Indianapolis' Smith and Heper, 8-4; while the duo of Parchowska and Gercar fell to Indianapolis' Speer and Boyts, 9-8(3) in No. 3 doubles.
Next up, the Redbirds will travel to Lincoln, Nebraska, to compete against Wyoming on Saturday, Feb. 21 and versus Nebraska Sunday, Feb. 22. Both competitions will begin at 11 a.m.
