COLLEGE STATION, Texas – With three weekends already gone in the 2015 campaign, Illinois State softball is back on the road with five games this weekend in College Station, Texas, on the campus of Texas A&M University.
The Redbirds enter the weekend with a 6-9 record and have gone 2-3 in all three weekends this season. ISU won two one-run ballgames last week in Gainesville, Florida, over Mercer and Liberty while falling to Kansas twice and No. 1 Florida.
ISU's offense sputtered last weekend as the Redbirds scored just nine runs in five games. However, the pitching staff kept ISU in nearly every game, giving up just 11 runs in the first four games of the weekend.
The Redbirds are led by Regan Romshek who leads the pitching staff in wins with five and also leads in batting average among everyday starters at .326. Romshek's 15 hits are the most on the team, as are her nine extra base hits.
Despite a rough offensive weekend in Gainesville, ISU still features four hitters batting .300 or higher. Romshek, Jordan de los Reyes and Annie Heineman are all above .300 while freshman Riley Strandgard had a breakout weekend at Florida and is currently hitting .462.
The schedule is no easier this weekend as ISU will play No. 22 Texas A&M twice and will also face a 12-4 Texas-San Antonio team twice. After the weekend, the Redbirds will have played eight games against ranked opponents.
The five-game slate begins with a 10 a.m. first pitch against UTSA Friday morning. Both games against A&M will be broadcast live on Watch ESPN and a live audio broadcast of all five games will be carried on GoRedbirds.com.
