NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State softball team will enjoy its first extended homestand of the season this week with five games at Marian Kneer Stadium. Wednesday, the Redbirds host Bradley in a doubleheader.
ISU (18-24, 9-6 MVC) is in the midst of a five-game losing streak and is coming off of a weekend sweep at the hands of Wichita State. Despite the losing streak, the Redbirds are third in the Missouri Valley Conference and are two games out of second place.
ISU is led by Annie Heineman who leads the team in batting average (.370), hits (50), runs (35), on-base percentage (.455) and stolen bases (11). Heineman has hit a home run in the last two Valley series and has five on the season.
Power has been the name of the game for ISU this season. With Kelsey Turczyn's solo shot last Sunday, the Redbirds have now hit 50 home runs this season. Jordan de los Reyes and Regan Romshek lead the team with 13 and 12, respectively. ISU currently ranks 32nd in the nation in home runs per game.
Bradley enters the doubleheader having won four of its last six, including its last two against Northern Iowa this past weekend. The Braves are 14-26 overall and 8-7 in the MVC.
Bradley and Illinois State have met 79 times and ISU owns a series record of 62-17. The Redbirds have won 13 of the last 15 and each of the last two. In 2014, Bradley took game one of the series 1-0 in Peoria before ISU bounced back to win the next two by scores of, 11-2, and, 6-3.
