ST. LOUIS – Illinois State's Lexi Varga has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Week, the league announced Monday. The Valley also named Wichita State's Abbie Lehman the Player of the Week and Loyola's Morgan Reardon the Defensive Player of the Week.
A freshman outside hitter from Rockford, Illinois, Varga earned all-tournament team honors for the second weekend in a row, after helping the Redbirds win the Country Financial Redbird Classic with a 3-0 record.
Varga tallied double-digit kills in all three matches over the weekend, including a career-high 15 in a 3-1 win over Toledo on Saturday. Varga recorded 35 kills over the three-match stretch, at a rate of 3.50 per set, while posting a .433 hitting percentage. She also added 23 digs.
The freshman outside hitter currently ranks ninth among MVC players in both kills (3.00 per set) and hitting percentage (.335).
