Wallace Named MVC Men’s Golfer of the Week

ST. LOUIS – The final round of the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate came to an end Monday, and the Illinois State men's golf team took first place in the field of 18. Freshman Trent Wallace, in his first collegiate tournament, won individual medalist honors with a three-round score of 211 (71-70-70). For his performance, Wallace was named the Missouri Valley Conference Golfer of the Week, as announced Wednesday.

Head coach Ray Kralis had high praise for Wallace, after his notable performance.

"Trent did a great job, going out there for the first time and winning the tournament," Kralis said. "Obviously he's a freshman, but he's not a freshman on the golf course, and he was brought here for a reason. I'm proud and excited for him."

Wallace fired two rounds under par to finish the tournament and set the tone for the rest of his teammates, as the Redbirds finished with a team score of 862 (299-287-287). ISU beat second-place Central Arkansas by 16 strokes, while defeating 17 other teams, including seven Missouri Valley Conference rivals.

The first-place finish was the second-straight team title for Illinois State at the Weibring Intercollegiate after last year's tournament ended just before the third round due to poor playing conditions.

After a week break, the Redbirds head to Fort Collins, Colorado, for the Ram Masters Invitational, Sept. 21-22.
