NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State softball team volunteered their time at two events on Saturday and have now completed five service events both on and off campus since the start of the academic year.
The Redbirds began the day at a community service event, volunteering at ARC's BBQ and Brew 5k before assisting to set up for the Reggies in the afternoon. The morning's event benefited the Normal community through the ARC living memorial fund and the McClean County Seniors.

At the event, student-athletes were split into groups to help with both the kids' activities and the race itself. One group helped facilitate small basketball games and bike races for kids while two groups assisted at water aid stations and race timing.
"It's always fun to give back to the community that has given us so much," sophomore Shannon Felde said. "We were thankful for the opportunity and enjoyed helping put on this wonderful event."
The team's volunteer-filled day wrapped up at Redbird Arena where the softball athletes helped set up for the Reggies. The squad helped decorate the concourse, as well as arrange centerpieces and programs for the guests.

Student-athletes with a 3.0 GPA or better and award winners were honored at The Reggies on Sunday.
The Illinois State softball team wrapped up the 2016 fall slate with the annual Parents' Day – a dual between the student athletes and their family members.
The Redbirds will return to action on the field in February to begin their spring season.
