CARBONDALE, Ill. – A pair of Illinois State swimming and diving records were set Friday on the third day of competition at the Missouri Valley Swimming and Diving Championships.
Rachel Holm broke the school record in the 100-yard breaststroke, swimming a time of 1:03.14, placing third to earn All-MVC First-Team honors. Rachel Root, the new 100-yard backstroke record holder, swam a time of 55.78 seconds, to earn a fifth-place finish.
Illinois State held on to its fourth-place position in the team standings after the third day of competition at the conference meet. Missouri State continued to lead, with host Southern Illinois right behind in second, and Northern Iowa in third.
"Tonight was a great night in the pool for us," said Illinois State head swimming coach Scott Cameron. "Again, we had multiple lifetime-best times in both the prelims and finals, and people were able to move up during the final swims. We also set two new school records."
Redbird senior Courtney Taylor raced to a fourth-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke event (1:03.24), finishing right behind Holm.
Savannah Rubocki earned a sixth-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley, with a time of 4:28.56, with teammate Karley Licking right behind, finishing in seventh (4:39.37).
Katie Breger raced into an eighth-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (58.06), while teammate Laura Paskoff earned an eighth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle, clocking a time of 1:54.65.
The Illinois State 400-yard medley relay team, consisting of Root, Holm, Kristin Verkler and Taylor, swam a time of 3:49.35, finishing in fourth place.
The MVC Championships conclude Saturday.
