NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State baseball team has been named one of 29 NCAA Division I baseball teams to earn the inaugural American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Team Academic Excellence Award.
Illinois State qualified for the award by posting a grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher during the 2015-16 academic year. The Redbirds posted a 3.26 combined GPA this spring, breaking their team GPA record for the fourth-consecutive semester.
Seven members of the Illinois State baseball team earned perfect 4.0 GPAs and 29 members of the team qualified for the AFNI Honor Roll by posting GPAs of 3.0 or higher in one or both semesters over the past calendar year. Â
The 2016 Illinois State baseball team posted a 17-37 overall record and a 7-13 mark in Missouri Valley Conference play. The season was highlighted by wins over three Big Ten opponents and the program's first victory over a top-10 opponent in over nine years.
