NORMAL, Ill. – Since the start of 2016-17 academic year, the Illinois State softball team completed three community service events both on and off campus.
The Redbirds welcomed incoming students to campus as Curb Birds during new student move in. Additionally, the team participated in the Day of the Dozer and volunteered at Sheridan Elementary School.
"It (the Day of the Dozer) was a really great experience and everyone had so much fun getting involved in the community," junior Riley Strandgard said.
As Curb Birds, the team was stationed at Watterson Towers during move-in day on Aug.17. Joined by the ISU police and fellow Redbird athletic teams, the squad helped unpack cars and give a warm Redbird welcome to new students and their families.
Later in the month, the softball team volunteered at the Day of the Dozer at the McLean County Fairgrounds. The squad helped kids on and off bulldozers, tractors, and construction equipment throughout the event.
Lastly, several ISU softball players participated in Sheridan Elementary School's Back to School Parade to welcome the students back. The squad was joined by several other ISU teams at the event.
"We had a blast getting to hang out with kids, and being able to lend a hand at the Dozer event," Strandgard said. "It's definitely something that we hope to get a chance to be involved with again next year."
