CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The Illinois State women's soccer team (9-9-2, 3-5 MVC) ended its 2017 season with a 1-0 loss at Northern Iowa (13-4-1, 5-3 MVC) Sunday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the MVC Tournament.
With temperatures near below freezing, the Redbirds came out ready to warm up. It was a physical battle throughout the midfield as neither team recorded a statistic until near the 15-minute mark. The first shot of the game came from UNI and resulted in a goal, giving them an early 1-0 lead they carried into halftime.
The Redbirds created multiple dangerous opportunities in the second half in search of the equalizer. Sophomore Alix McArthur had a header off a cross early in the second half that almost evened the score. Freshman Jessica Denney also had dangerous opportunities, with both her shots on the match forcing a save by the UNI keeper.
ISU ends the 2017 season 5th in the Valley standings. UNI will advance to face No. 1 seed Drake Friday night in the semifinals. Loyola also advanced to the semifinals and they will face No. 2 seed Missouri State Friday afternoon at tournament site Missouri State.
