NORMAL, Ill. – In recognition of their support of the Weisbecker Scholarship Fund (WSF) and Illinois State Athletics, Steve and Sandi Adams have been named the recipients of the 2017 Joseph F. Warner Golden Redbird Award.
The Joseph F. Warner Golden Redbird Award is the highest honor bestowed to a donor by the Illinois State Athletics Department and recognizes individuals for dedication and loyal support of the Weisbecker Scholarship Fund and Illinois State Athletics through exemplary service, leadership and financial support. It was renamed in 2003 after the death of Joe, a WSF and Twin Cities leader, who perished in a plane crash.
"We're so excited to recognize Steve and Sandi Adams with the 2017 Joseph F. Warner Golden Redbird Award," Illinois State Associate Athletics Director for Development Matt Lyons said. "For over forty years, Steve and Sandi have been loyal, committed and generous supporters of the WSF and Illinois State Athletics. They exemplify what this award signifies and it is our honor to recognize them in this way."
Steve and Sandi Adams have been fans of the Redbirds since the mid-50's, and have been Redbird season ticket holders and donors since 1976. Steve's voice has become synonymous with home basketball games, as he has volunteered as the public address announcer for Redbird men's basketball for 40 seasons, encompassing 574 games. Steve also served as the PA announcer for football games until the renovation of Hancock Stadium, tallying 201 games. In addition to Steve's voice, you have likely heard Sandi cheering from the stands at every game.
Furthermore, both Steve and Sandi have served as mentors and a sounding board for various Athletics administrators for many years. In addition to being loyal and generous WSF supporters, the Adams' have been a shining example of what it means to support Illinois State Athletics behind the scenes in ways that are rarely recognized.
