GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Illinois State baseball team has earned the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Team Academic Excellence Award, the organization recently announced.
Illinois State was one of just 36 Division I squads – and one of only two Missouri Valley Conference teams – to earn the distinction. Only teams posting a combined 3.0 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) or better during the 2016-17 academic year were eligible to earn the honor.
The Illinois State baseball team set a new team GPA record during the spring semester with a 3.47 team mark, marking the sixth-consecutive semester with a better team GPA. The baseball team's GPA was tops among men's athletics teams at Illinois State this spring.
Thirty-one members of the team's 35-man roster were named to the AFNI Honor Roll, while 29 were named to the MVC honor roll. Eight members of the team posted perfect 4.0 GPAs during the spring semester.
