LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Illinois State volleyball team has earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the ninth-consecutive season, the AVCA announced Monday.
The award honors men's and women's collegiate and high school volleyball teams that have displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale.
The Redbirds compiled a team GPA of 3.68 in the fall, setting a new team record, as seven Redbirds posted perfect 4.0 GPAs. The team combined for a 3.61 GPA during the spring semester, again with seven players registering 4.0 GPAs.
The Illinois State volleyball team posted a 17-15 overall record during the 2016 season. The team's 2017 season begins Aug. 25-26 at the Hampton Inn & Suites Waco North Baylor Invitational, hosted by Baylor, in Waco, Texas.
A record number of 822 teams earned the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2016-17 season, including 145 from the NCAA Division I Women's level.
