IUPUI Ends Redbird Soccer’s Undefeated Home Record

Illinois State (6-6-2, 1-1-0) dropped a 4-0 decision to IUPUI (5-6-3, 2-1-1) Monday night. The Redbirds had been undefeated at home during the 2018 campaign and now move to 4-1-1 at Adelaide Street Field.

At halftime, both teams were scoreless with Illinois State controlling much of the possession. In the first period, the Redbirds outshot IUPUI 11-3 and 5-1 in shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper Haley Smith had one save in the first 45 minutes of play.

The Jaguars would break out the scoring a few minutes into the second half when sophomore Valentine Pursey would net a goal off a free kick. IUPUI senior Jessica Flores would add her second goal of the season in the 78th minute, with a one-touch redirect off a corner kick.

Reigning Horizon League Offensive Player of the Week Elizabeth Bueckers would finish the scoring for the Jaguars, adding a pair of goals in the 80th and 81st minute. Both goals for the freshman were headers, improving her total scoring for the season to four goals.

The second half goals were too much for Illinois State to overcome, despite outshooting IUPUI 20-9 and 11-5 in shots on goal in the match. The Redbirds could not get any past Jaguar goalkeeper Sophia Lipka, who had eleven saves in goal. Senior Angel Krell led the team with four shots. Junior Kate Del Fava and freshman Hannah Mueller each added three shots of their own with all three of the Redbirds individually recording two shots on goal.

UP NEXT: Illinois State hosts Valparaiso at home on Sunday, Oct. 7 in Missouri Valley Conference play. The 'Birds and Crusaders will kick off at 1 p.m. at Adelaide Street Field. The match will also serve as Redbird soccer's Senior Day, with seniors Angel Krell and Kiley Czerwinski both being honored before the game.
