ST. LOUIS – After helping lead the way for a pair of 100 yard rushers in a dominant 51-3 win over Southern Illinois, Illinois State sophomore left tackle Drew Himmelman has been named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive Lineman of the Week by the league office Monday.
The weekly honor is the first for Himmelman in his career at ISU and the sixth for a Redbird player this season. He graded out the highest among a group of Illinois State lineman that had an extremely productive day in the Homecoming victory over SIU.Â
The Geneseo, Illinois, native and his teammates up front helped both James Robinson (202) and Markel Smith (145) set career single-game rushing bests, as the Redbirds combined to rush for 409 yards on the ground against the Salukis. That mark ranks fifth on the school single-game team rushing list. Himmelman also helped protect MVFC Newcomer of the Week Brady Davis, who tied his career-high with four passing touchdowns in the contest for the Redbirds.
No. 7/8 Illinois State (5-1, 2-1 MVFC) hits the road this Saturday to take on No. 1 North Dakota State (6-0, 3-0 MVFC) in a crucial MVFC matchup at the Fargodome. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m., and the game can be seen on ESPN+ and heard on WJBC AM 1230 and 93.7 FM or the TuneIn app.
