Holding onto the lead from the 14-minute mark of the first half, the Redbirds continued to keep the advantage until the Zips made a three-pointer with 16:10 to play in the game to re-gain the lead. Akron's lead grew as high as four, and the Redbirds once again responded with a run, as a 12-2 ISU run, capped by a Phil Fayne dunk put Illinois State on top for good in the game. The lead was trimmed to as few as two with just over a minute to play; however, ISU made 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch to ice the game.
