ST. LOUIS – Illinois State volleyball student-athlete Lexi Varga has been tabbed the Missouri Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the league announce Monday. This honor is the first of its kind for the senior.
"Lexi (Varga) was extremely sharp, focused and determined for us this weekend," head coach Leah Johnson commented. "She is playing her best volleyball of the season right now, and has earned every bit of this honor."
Varga reached double-digit kills in both of Illinois State's wins this weekend over Drake and previously-ranked UNI. She tallied a team-high 27 kills on the weekend, averaging 3.38 kills per set, while also contributing four assists and four blocks, for a team-high 30.0 total points.
The Rockford, Illinois, native led the Redbirds in Saturday's win against the Panthers, contributing 16 kills on .318 hitting to register a team-high 17.5 points, making it the third match this season Varga has led the team in kills against nationally-ranked opponents. Varga also delivered 11 kills in Friday night's sweep of Drake, aiding in Illinois State's season-high attack percentage of .392.
Illinois State will play its final three matches of the regular season on the road, beginning with contests at Loyola Chicago and Valparaiso this weekend.
