SEATTLE, Wash. – Coming off an impressive 3-2 late-night victory, Illinois State returned to Husky Ballpark Saturday afternoon to face Washington in the second game of the weekend series in Seattle. The Huskies (7-6) jumped out to an early first-inning lead and powered their way to a 5-2 win over the Redbirds (6-5) to even the series at a game apiece.
Redbird starter Brent Headrick (1-1) was saddled with the loss, after tying his career-best with seven innings pitched. The left-hander allowed all five runs, four of which were earned, and gave up eight hits while striking out a career-high eight batters. Washington's Jordan Jones (2-2) picked up the complete-game victory, allowing just the two runs on four hits with 11 strikeouts.
A two-run home run off the bat of Levi Jordan in the bottom of the first inning gave the Huskies an early 2-0 lead. Two more scoreless innings would pass before the Redbirds tied the game in the top of the fourth. Owen Miller reached on an error and then scored on a RBI double by Collin Braithwaite to make it 2-1. After Braithwaite moved to third on a fly out by Noah Sadler, Joe Aeilts brought in Braithwaite with a sacrifice fly to right field to tie the game at 2-2.
The tie was short-lived however, as another home run by Jordan gave Washington a 3-2 lead and the Huskies would tack on another run on a RBI single later in the inning to go up 4-2 after four innings. Washington would then add another run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 5-2 headed to the seventh. Illinois State could not muster any more offense the rest of the way, and Washington took game two. Â
