TULSA, Okla. – The Illinois State softball team (9-18) played its seventh game in six days in the state of Oklahoma on Wednesday night at Tulsa (15-10), falling to the Golden Hurricane, 6-1.
A one-out single up the middle by Allison Spence put a base runner on for Illinois State in the top of the first, but the Golden Hurricane defense wouldn't let the Redbirds get on the board. In the bottom of the frame, a single to right field brought home a Tulsa base runner to help the home team take a 1-0 lead after one inning of play.
After sending Illinois State down in order for the next two innings, and Tulsa extending its lead to four runs, a throwing error by the Golden Hurricane second baseman helped put Shannon Felde on base in the top of the fourth. Spence's second hit of the day – a single to right field – put runners on the corners for Illinois State with no outs. A ground out to the pitcher with two outs moved the runners into scoring position, but neither base runner could make it home.
The Redbirds continued to work in the fifth inning, as Riley Hale was dealt a lead-off walk. Catcher Brittni LaFountaine reached first base on a fielder's choice to get Hale out at second and Abby Turczyn dropped a single into centerfield, but Tulsa continued to keep the Redbirds from scoring.
Senior Riley Strandgard bombed a one-out home run over the left-center field wall in the top of the sixth to put Illinois State on the board. The long ball marks the second of the season for the shortstop, second in as many games and the 23rd of her career. In the bottom of the frame, Tulsa added a pair of runs but two-straight ground outs to relief pitcher Ali Domkuski sent the game into the final inning. The Golden Hurricane sent the Redbirds down in order in the top of the seventh to grab the win over Illinois State.
Illinois State will open Missouri Valley Conference play at Missouri State this weekend with a doubleheader scheduled for Friday and a single game on Saturday morning. Â
