The Illinois State women's soccer team defeated Iowa, 1-0, in an exhibition match Sunday afternoon at Adelaide Street Field. The Redbirds got on the board early with a goal by Natalie Vaughn-Low in the first minute, then proceeded to hold Iowa scoreless for the next 90 minutes of action in an excellent display of defense.
The game-winning goal occurred 26 seconds into the match when Vaughn-Low passed to senior Angel Krell in the box, forcing Iowa's goalie to come out in an attempt to block Krell's shot. Vaughn-Low then slotted the rebound into the back of the net.
A total of 20 different 'Birds saw action in the exhibition match, combining for 14 shots. Kate Del Fava, Riley O'Brien, Shaina Dudas and Natalie Vaughn-Low all recorded shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper Haley Smith collected four saves in 59 minutes of action, while redshirt freshman Jenny Scara tallied a save in 31 minutes.
Illinois State's regular season begins Aug. 16, as the Redbirds will host CSUN at Adelaide Street Field at 7 p.m. Admission to all regular season home games are free.
