Dominant First Half Lifts Redbirds to 5-2 Victory

Illinois State (2-2-2) defeated UIC (0-6), 5-2, Sunday afternoon in Chicago. Five different Redbirds got on the board in the match that saw ISU outshoot UIC 21-11 (14-4). Illinois now leads the all-time series with UIC, 2-0.

Junior midfielder Kate Del Fava scored her first goal of the season in the sixth minute when she broke free, slotting the ball into the lower right corner. Less than a minute later, senior forward Angel Krell found the back of the net off a cross from freshman Shaina Dudas. Krell has three goals through the first six games this season.

Around ten minutes later, junior forward Mikayla Unger opened her own scoring account for the 2018 campaign, beating the keeper one-on-one, scoring her tenth career goal.

Junior midfielder Alix McArthur finished out the first half scoring, converting on a shot 12 yards out in the 35th minute. Natalie Vaughn-Low and Unger both assisted on McArthur's first career goal that put the Redbirds up 4-0 at halftime.

Shaina Dudas would add one more goal in the 65th minute off a cross from senior Kiley Czerwinski to cap Illinois State's scoring for the day.

The Flames attempted a comeback to no avail, with goals off a free kick and corner kick in the 71st and 83rd minute respectively. UIC goalkeepers Tara Khayam and Haley Leanna combined for nine saves in goal while Illinois State junior goalkeeper Haley Smith recorded two saves.

UP NEXT: Illinois State continues their seven-game road trip on Thursday, heading up to Madison, Wisconsin to take on the Wisconsin Badgers at 6 p.m. at McClimon Field.
