ST. LOUIS – Illinois State sophomore Rachel Hickey earned her first MVC Cross Country Runner of the Week honor as announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon.
With temperatures in the high 80s in Columbia, Missouri this past Friday, Hickey was the first Redbird and the first member of any Missouri Valley Conference school to cross the finish line at the Gans Creek Classic, placing 17th overall with a time of 22:37.8 in the women's 6K.
Hickey's time is currently the top 6K time in the Valley by nearly 11 seconds. As a team, Illinois State placed fifth overall, topping both Drake and Southern Illinois, the only other Valley schools competing at Mizzou.
A native of Peru, Illinois, Hickey's Runner of the Week honor is the first of her cross country career and her second honor throughout her time at ISU.

The Illinois State women will race in the Gold Division this Friday, Oct. 4 at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Indiana. The Gold Division 5K race is set to begin at 2:15 p.m. CT.
