Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Dayton Hammes

Redbirds fall 41-58 at Marquette

MILWAUKEE – After a slow start with neither team scoring in the first two minutes of the game, Illinois State was never able to find an offensive rhythm and fell, 41-58, to Marquette on Sunday afternoon, inside the Al McGuire Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Marquette's Chloe Marotta scored the first basket of the game and the Golden Eagles never relinquished the lead from that point on.

Shooting just 27.1 percent from the field and 10.5 percent from beyond the arc, the Redbirds struggled to find a groove offensively with their best shooting percentage coming in the third quarter when they connected on 30 percent (3-of-10) of their shots.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Senior guard TeTe Maggett led the Redbirds in scoring and rebounding with 16 points and six rebounds, marking her second-straight double-digit scoring effort.
  • Graduate student Lexi Wallen was the only other Redbird to reach double-figure scoring, netting 10 points.

QUOTES FROM COACH KRISTEN GILLESPIE

On today's performance against Marquette:

"I thought Marquette played well. They really took us out of what we were trying to do offensively. I thought we were bothered by their size and their pressure. I thought we did a great job on the boards. Our keys we did, we just didn't score the ball. It's tough to win when you score 41 points."

On what they can take away from this game:

"I think there's going to be a ton of film for us to learn from and to show our players. Once again, no matter who we play, we can't let them take us out of what we were trying to do offensively, and I thought they did that. We've got to get better tomorrow. We have another big opponent to get ready for with a game against Illinois on Saturday."

UP NEXT
