Redbirds Score Early to Down Cougars 16-9

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The Illinois State baseball team defeated the SIUE Cougars 16-9 on the road Wednesday evening. The Redbirds scored five runs in the first inning to get ahead early. The game was called in the top of the ninth inning due to heavy rainfall, as the 'Birds picked up win their tenth win of the season.

"The wind was blowing out at 30mph today. So, we knew the park was going to give up a ton of runs. We were very aggressive at the plate which set the tone. Once we settled down on the mound we pitched pretty well in a tough environment."

Scoring Breakdown:

  • In the first inning, Joe Butler singled to right field to drive home Parola to put the 'Birds up 1-0. Jack Butler hit a grand slam to left-center field to make the score 5-0 after the top of the first inning. SIUE scored two runs in the home half of the inning. ISU led SIUE 5-2 after one inning of play.
  • The Cougars scored a run in the bottom of inning number two to make the score 5-3.
  • The 'Birds scored five more runs in the top of the fourth inning. First, Joe Butler doubled to drive home two runs. Next, a couple of singles by Hays and Peterson plated two more runs. Then, Rave singled to bring home Peterson to give ISU the 10-3 lead.
  • Aeilts homered to left field in the top of the fifth inning to make 11-3 in favor of the Redbirds. The Cougars scored two runs in the bottom half to make the score 11-5 after five innings.
  • Parola singled to left to drive home Joe Butler in the sixth inning. Later, Libman hit a sacrifice fly in the inning to drive home another run. ISU led SIUE 13-5 after six.
  • In the seventh inning, Hays homered to left to make the score 14-5. Then, Peterson homered for the third time in two days to give ISU the 16-5 lead.
  • SIUE scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to make the score 16-9.
  • The game was called in the top of the ninth inning due to heavy rain. Therefore, the game was final after eight complete innings. Illinois State defeated SIUE 16-9.

Illinois State will face off against Central Michigan this weekend in its first home series of the year at Duffy Bass Field in Normal.
