Redbirds Drop Game One to Hot-Hitting Blue Jays

CREIGHTON, Neb. – The Illinois State baseball team dropped a 17-3 decision in the Saturday afternoon matchup against the Creighton Blue Jays. The Redbirds now own a 13-10 overall record and will finish the three-game series tomorrow with the twin bill set to begin at 12 p.m.CT.

"We didn't play very well defensively," Coach Holm said. "I thought Brent Headrick did a pretty good job of gathering himself and getting a few innings in the first, but you will not win many college baseball games if you play the way we did defensively. 

Scoring Breakdown:

  • Creighton collected eight runs in the first inning to pull an early lead, with six hits and three errors.
  • Illinois State got on the board with a run in the fourth inning as Jack Butler hit an RBI single, bringing in Jordan Libman.
  • The Blue Jays answered in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three earned runs to extend their lead to 11-1.
  • Creighton's offense continued to heat up, adding three more to the board in the bottom of the fifth. Two ground-rule doubles and an error pushed the Blue Jay's ahead 14-1.
  •  Derek Parola singled through the left side in the top of the seventh inning, capturing an RBI as Gunner Peterson scored for the Redbirds. Parola then made his way to home plate as Joe Aeilts singled to left field to give ISU two runs in the seventh.
  • Jordan Hovey homered to right field in the bottom of the seventh, earning three RBI and pushing the Blue Jay lead to 17-3. Neither team would score in the final two innings resulting in a 17-3 final score.
