‘Birds Offense Powers Past Hawkeyes, 11-6

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Illinois State defeated Iowa on the road Wednesday night by a final score of 11-6. The 'Birds combined for 16 hits in the game. The win improves the Redbirds record to 15-13 on the season before Missouri Valley Conference play starts this weekend at Valparaiso.

Scoring Breakdown:

  • Iowa scored on a double to left-center field in the home half of the first to go up 1-0 on the Redbirds.
  • Joe Butler stole home in the second inning of the game to tie it at 1-1.
  • In the third inning, Rave doubled to right field to bring home Huggins. Then, Libman singled to bring home Rave. The 'Birds led 3-1 after the top half. The Hawkeyes scored one in the bottom of the inning on a single to right-center field to make it 3-2 in favor of ISU after three innings.
  • Parola doubled in the top of the fourth to score Rave. Libman followed with a single to right to bring Parola home. ISU led 5-2 after four innings.
  • It was Parola again in the sixth inning, as he scored Huggins on a sacrifice fly to right to make the score 6-2.
  • Iowa scored in the bottom of the seventh inning on a single to center to trim the Redbirds lead.
  • In the ninth, Hays reached on a throwing error that allowed Peterson to score. Next, Jack Butler singled home Hays to make the score 8-3. Aidan Huggins followed suit with a single to center field to bring home Butler. Aeilts would later triple to right-center field to bring home Huggins and Rave to make the score 11-3.
  • Iowa fought back in the ninth inning, as Whelan hit a three-run home run to make the score 11-6. That would conclude the scoring, as Illinois State defeated Iowa 11-6.
