Redbirds Rally Falls Short to Purple Aces, 11-8

NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State dropped the middle game of the three-game series to Evansville on Friday evening at Duffy Bass Field, 11-8. The Redbirds scored six runs in the seventh inning and two runs in the eighth but would ultimately come up short. The Redbirds (31-22, 13-7 MVC) will try to take the rubber match of the series tomorrow afternoon as the first pitch has been moved to 12 p.m.

Scoring Breakdown:

  • Evansville struck first the game in the top of the second inning with a solo home run to go up, 1-0.
  • In the top of the third inning, a bunt single drove home one run to increase the lead for Evansville.
  • The Purple Aces scored six runs on four hits to extend their lead to 8-0 over the Redbirds.
  • Evansville hit two solo home runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a double-digit lead over Illinois State, 10-0.
  • In the top of the seventh inning, Beilsmith homered for the second time of the day to make the score, 11-0.
  • Nick Zouras drove home the first run of the game for the Redbirds in the bottom of the seventh inning on a fielder's choice. Three batters later, Huggins hit a grand slam to center field to make the score, 11-5. Aeilts singled to left field to drive home Derek Parola to conclude the scoring in the inning, cutting the deficit to 11-6 after seven innings.
  • Jack Butler homered to right field in the bottom of the eighth inning to bring home Zouras and make the score, 11-8.
