Redbirds Fall in Second Game of Series to Sycamores, 13-1

NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State Redbirds and Indiana State Sycamores are in line to square off on Sunday afternoon for the top spot in the Missouri Valley Conference after the visiting Sycamores took the second game of a three-game series on Saturday afternoon by a 13-1 final score.

"You would like to win both games of the series, but we knew if we could find a way to split those first two games, you will like your chances on Sunday. We are kind of in the spot we want to be in. We got to their Friday guy, and their Saturday guy got to us, so we have to come out and swing the bats, and obviously turn the page after this one. We have the chance to win the series tomorrow."

Scoring Breakdown:

  • Indiana State scored first in the contest when Jake Means doubled to deep center field in the second inning, chasing home Dane Tofteland, who reached earlier in the inning on a fielding error.
  • The Sycamores opened the third inning with three hits and a hit batter, scoring four runs in all, jumping ahead to a 5-0 lead.
  • Indiana State added four more runs in the top of the fifth inning as the visitors used three singles, three doubles, and a sacrifice fly to accumulate most of the damage in the inning.
  • The Sycamores added four additional runs in the top of the ninth inning – the visitors' third four-run inning of the contest.
  • The Redbirds got on the board in the bottom of the ninth inning when Zouras singled home pinch-runner Jeremy Gaines, giving the game its 13-1 final score.
