ST. LOUIS – The Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Spotlight, for this week of the 2018-19 academic year, presented by Enterprise Bank and Trust Company, is Illinois State's Brent Headrick. The Custer Park, Illinois, native was chosen as the male representative, the league office announced on Wednesday.
The junior right-handed pitcher has a 3.59 GPA in business administration for the Redbird baseball team. This season, Headrick is 6-3 in 12 starts with a 4.11 ERA. Meanwhile in conference, he is 5-0 with a 1.29 ERA. The junior pitcher has 86 strikeouts in 70.0 innings of work and has held opposing hitters to a .228 average.
Headrick is active around the community, as he serves as a recess buddy where he interacts with local schools around Bloomington-Normal during recess time spending time with different students while playing games with them. He also serves in a pen pal program where he keeps in contact with a 5th grader through letters in order to be a positive influence for him. On campus, Headrick serves as the community service rep for the baseball team on the campus SAAC.
To qualify for the MVC Scholar-Athlete Spotlight, student-athletes must carry a cumulative GPA of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing. Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to academic qualifications, student-athletes are evaluated on their campus involvement and community service.
Illinois State (28-20, 10-5 MVC) is set to play its final road conference series this weekend down Interstate 74 against Bradley. Friday and Saturday's game are scheduled for 6 p.m. at Dozer Park. The series finale will take place on Sunday, with first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
