Redbirds and Leathernecks Meet in Sunday Showdown

The Illinois State soccer team is set to face the Western Illinois Leathernecks in a Sunday afternoon match at Adelaide Street Field. Kickoff with the Leathernecks is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Sunday's contest will not be streamed. Fans can follow along with live stats or on Twitter (@Redbird_Soccer) for in-game updates.

Western Illinois – What You Need to Know
The Leathernecks have started off the 2019 season with a 2-3-1 record, most recently falling 3-0 at Milwaukee. WIU has scored a total of five goals from three different players, with sophomore forward Amy Andrews leading the team with three goals and six points on the season. Senior goalkeeper Ines Palmiero Herrera has started every game in goal this year, making 29 saves and allowing nine goals through six games.

Western Illinois Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson has been at the helm of the program for four seasons now, collecting a 9-40-2 record.

Redbirds vs. Leathernecks
ISU leads the series with WIU, 5-1-2. The Redbirds posted a 4-1 win over the Leathernecks when they last met at Adelaide Street Field during the 2018 season.

Last Time Out
Redbird soccer came out victorious on Friday night, in a hard-fought 2-1 win over the Utah State Aggies. Logan Ziegler and Natalie Vaughn-Low were the goal scorers for the Redbirds, and sophomore Jenny Scara made her first start of the season in goal, picking up a win and making seven saves.

Game Information
Fans, friends, family, and alumni of the Illinois State soccer program are invited to help the team honor former soccer player Julie Heidecke at Sunday's game. On April 29, 1998, Julie Heidecke was involved in an automobile accident that ended her life. In her one season with the Redbirds, Heidecke's personality and demeanor inspired teammates and coaches. As a result, former head coach Pete Kowall, the Julie Heidecke Foundation and ISU Athletics established an award in her memory to recognize a Redbird soccer player following Heidecke's path to commitment, spirit, determination, leadership, sportsmanship, academics, morality and concern for others.

The concession special on Sunday will be $5 walking tacos and the first 50 students in attendance will receive a free t-shirt, as part of Illinois State Athletics' Shirtember promotion. Students must present their student ID to be eligible for giveaways.
