#BirdsAbroad: Protecting The Turtles

The Illinois State soccer program is on a spring break foreign trip (March 8-15) exploring the beautiful country of Costa Rica. Follow the Redbirds on social media (#BirdsAbroad) via all their channels and read a daily travel log on GoRedbirds.com.

Wednesday's blog from Abby Basler:

Costa Rica is hot! We had our second game of the trip against a local club team, with girls that ranged from 18 years old to 28 year olds. After our 5-0 win, we shared tropical local fruit and conversation with the other team. They were extremely nice and it was a great experience to talk about our different cultures.

After our game, we got a few hours to cool off at the pool. The weather was absolutely amazing and being poolside with your teammates always makes for a fun time.

We then had the opportunity to clean up a local beach that is blocked off to protect sea turtles. We picked up trash and moved large logs all under a breathtaking sunset. This experience was very eye-opening and taught us a lot about the importance of recycling for the protection of our wildlife.

After this jam packed day, we ended by playing card games and enjoying the evening breeze. This trip is an experience of a lifetime and I'm so lucky to spend it with these 24 girls. We may be sunburnt, but the memories are so worth it.
