MOLINE, Ill. – Illinois State junior standout Juliunn Redmond was named both the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Year and Sixth Player of the Year, as announced by the conference office Thursday afternoon. Redmond, who averaged 13.7 points and 7.2 rebounds in Valley play, is the only player to ever sweep both awards in the same season.
Redmond becomes Illinois State's third-straight Newcomer of the Year, joining TeTe Maggett (2019) and Simone Goods (2018) who had earned it in the two seasons prior. Five of the last ten MVC Newcomers of the Year have been Redbirds.
The Chicago, Illinois, native had a stellar debut season with the Redbirds, recording five double-doubles in MVC play and leading the team with 54 steals. The junior tallied double figures in 15 of 18 MVC games, also averaging 2.5 assists and 2.0 steals per game in that span. Redmond came off the bench in all but one Valley game.
