RB4L Spotlight: Keeping Us Safe

Today's RB4L Spotlight features former football player Jeff Weese (1998-2003). Weese is a four-year letterwinner and a member of the 1999-2000 team that made a semi-final run in the Missouri Valley Football Conference playoffs. He graduated in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science and majored in Criminal Justice. Weese has been a police officer with the DeKalb Police Department since January 2006.

What have the past few weeks been like for you, working in law enforcement during this pandemic?
Working in law enforcement is probably what you would expect lately. We have fewer calls, and we try to take extra steps to keep our department and the citizens we serve healthy and safe.

What has been the effect of the pandemic on your city?
Most calls for service have dropped in numbers, while others seemed to rise. Domestic disputes usually rise when wintertime arrives because most people are cooped up together and arguments start easier than normal. COVID-19 has had a similar effect.

What has changed for you in your role in law enforcement?
Our operating procedures have changed day in and day out as far as how enforcement action is taken. Crimes that are considered minor that officers would normally arrest for may be delayed in order to keep the citizens and the officers as healthy as possible. Courts have closed several operations, so court appearances have been put on hold. We wear safety equipment everywhere we go. Lots of changes in a short amount of time.

What has been the most challenging aspect of adjusting to this pandemic?
Personally, and professionally, it has been difficult to decrease interaction with friends, family and co-workers. I am a social person, so missing out on face-to-face contact is disheartening. It also makes things difficult at work with most of our jobs involving direct interaction with the public.

What positives are you experiencing from your situation?
A huge positive for work is that calls for service and crime have decreased, and our officers are able to catch up on reports and pending investigations.  Personally, it has been nice to "hit the brakes" on life and spend quality time with family. With all the hustle and bustle of work, afterschool sports and activities, and other engagements, I think COVID-19 will bring families closer and hopefully give some perspective to what is truly important to individual families.

What are some ways the public can help people that are working on the front lines?
Stay at home. Be patient with your neighbors and fellow citizens, and maybe even with your police officers. Be kind. Be responsible for your health and the health of others who may be more vulnerable than you. Everyone should also root for the Redbirds ... that always helps everyone!
