Redbird Gymnasts Host First Meet of the Season Against SEMO

NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State gymnastics team is back in action this weekend and will host fellow Midwest Independent Conference foe Southeast Missouri State Saturday at Horton Field House beginning at 2 p.m. The Redbirds were scheduled to face SEMO on Jan. 24, but the meet was cancelled due to COVID-19 protocols.

"What a difference a week makes," ISU head coach Bob Conkling said. "Having most of our athletes back in workouts this week and having a full lineup for this weekend has given our team new energy. We are excited and looking forward for our meet against SEMO." 

The Redbirds were shorthanded in their season-opener last weekend at Ball State, with only eight team members available to compete. Despite the limited squad, the Redbirds battled but ultimately fell by a final score of 194.425-187.975. 

Sofia Iribarren, Charlise Doctor and Savannah Remkus each competed in the all-around for ISU, with Iribarren leading the way with a 38.375 thanks to a 9.800 score on bars. Cameron Topp led the way on floor for the Redbirds with the highest individual score of the day at 9.825 to tie for second place, with Remkus following with a 9.725 to place seventh.

After taking third at their season-opening tri meet with Texas Woman's and Lindenwood, the Redhawks have captured the top spot at their last two competitions. Last weekend, SEMO posted a score of 48.525 on floor to just edge out Texas Woman's, 192.425-192.375, at Houck Field House.

The Redhawk have been led by Dahlia Solorzano-Caruso, who was awarded MIC Gymnast of the Week honors for the second consecutive week. Solorzano-Caruso paced the Redhawks on every event besides beam for three individual event titles in last weekend's victory.

In accordance with state and local guidelines, fans are currently not allowed to attend home ISU Athletics events. Game dates, opponents, times and locations are all subject to change.
